If you've got an old laptop collecting dust in your home, you're not alone. In a survey conducted last spring by the Consumer Reports Survey Group, a quarter of the members who had purchased multiple laptops since 2014 confessed to letting one of those devices linger under the roof—unused—after it had been replaced.

And that raises a good question: How do you go about finding a new home for an old laptop? With Earth Day approaching, here are a few eco-friendly options to consider.

Online marketplaces make it really easy to list items, offering intuitive step-by-step instructions to help you sell your wares without a fee. While eBay takes a small cut of the sale price, I’ve found that it still yields a bigger sum than the buy-back sites such as CashItUSed and SellMeLaptop.

Most people are familiar with eBay, Amazon and Craigslist. The first two are internet based markets where one can list pretty much any kind of item hoping to find a buyer willing to pay the asking price. Those services are close to perfect in a very general way. As you get into more details you will possibly find the two much more complicated than it seemed in the beginning.

I got online quotes for about a dozen laptop models from seven trade-in sites. Most people only hang onto their laptops for a few years before replacing them, so I used laptops that were released between 2011 and 2014. The laptops also represent a range of different models, from budget PCs to gaming laptops. For each of the online quotes, I selected “like new” or “flawless” when asked about the condition, with all the accessories included.

eBay is undoubtedly the most popular place to sell used anything on the web, and it should come as no surprise that a fair volume of MacBooks are swapped there indeed. It might not be the easiest or most secure of destinations to sell your MacBook Pro, but it does have the largest pool of potential buyers. And unlike Swappa, you can hold auctions to potentially juice that MacBook, Air, or Pro for every dime it’s worth.

It goes without saying that eBay is a pretty good place to get a fair price for your device, but it also comes with a few downsides. It’s going to take way more work to list, watch, and monitor an eBay listing than it will to just send in your device through a trade-in site, and you’re also putting yourself at slightly higher risk of ending up with an undesirable buyer. eBay’s fees are also higher than many other sites.
